Vanguard Medical Group is an independent, physician-owned primary care practice with eleven offices across Northern and Central New Jersey. Founded in 2012, we've spent more than a decade building a practice environment where family physicians can do their best work — and keep doing it. If the nearest office isn't quite right, tell us — as part of Vanova Health Partners, we have relationships with other independent practices in the region and can often make a useful introduction.

What does it mean that Vanguard is physician-owned and led?
Vanguard is owned and operated by the physicians who practice here — not by a hospital system, a private equity firm, or an insurer. Clinical decisions are made by physicians, not by administrators whose interests sit outside the exam room. That independence shows up in how we practice. Our physicians include six past presidents of the New Jersey Academy of Family Physicians, faculty at NJ medical schools, and hospital department chairs — clinicians who chose independent medicine and have led it at the highest level.
How does the team-based care model work day to day?
We practice within VanguardCare, our team-based care model. You're supported by nurses, advanced practice professionals, pharmacists, dietitians, behavioral health professionals, social workers, a telemedicine team, a population health team, medical assistants, and a dedicated specialist referral team — plus onsite laboratory services. The point isn't headcount. The point is that administrative work doesn't drown out the medicine. You do the medicine. The team handles the rest.
I'm finishing residency — how does Vanguard support early-career physicians?
Residents and early-career physicians come to Vanguard for mentorship, meaningful patient relationships, and the chance to practice with real support from day one. You'll be surrounded by experienced family physicians — including faculty members at NJ residency programs — who want to see you grow. We sponsor continuing medical education, conferences, and workshops. Leadership paths open when your experience is ready for them.
What EMR and tech stack do you use?
We use athenahealth with ambient scribing, so you spend less time on documentation and more time with patients. Population health tools, credentialing, payer contracting, billing and coding, compliance, and tech support are all handled centrally — you don't manage any of it.
Where are Vanguard's practices, and how does placement work?
We have offices across Northern and Central New Jersey — and relationships with other independent practices throughout the state. Each office runs as an independent primary care practice, with day-to-day operations managed by a local medical director and supported by our centralized teams. Placement depends on what you're looking for and what we're hiring for — the best answer is a conversation.
